History
National University of Kaohsiung (hereafter NUK) was established, in compliance with government industrial development policy, to launch Asia-Pacific Regional Operations Center including the Southern Taiwan Science Park, Kaohsiung Multifunctional Commerce and Trade Park and International Logistics Center, and to assist industry upgrading and cultivating technology and management talents. NUK was approved by the Executive Yuan to establish a Preparatory Office in May 1997, officially founded at 700 Kaohsiung University Road, Nan-zi District, Kaohsiung on February 1, 2000, and began recruiting the first class of students in August, 2000.

1.The Executive Yuan approved the founding a Preparatory Office of NUK. Director of the Preparatory Office Ren-hong Wang began his directorship on June 11. A conference room on the 5th floor of the Administrative Building of Kaohsiung Municipal Chuang-Shan Senior High School on loan to the Preparatory Office began operations, and the 2nd Conference Room was used as Preparatory Office on June 13. 2.Vice President, also Premier of the Executive Yuan, Mr. Lian Chan presided at the opening ceremony of the Preparatory Office on July 22. |

The Ministry of Education (hereafter MOE) approved the establishment of the Depts of Western Languages and Literature, Law, Applied Economics, Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering on September 29. MOE approved the establishment of the Dept of Government and Law on October 2. |

1. Celebrations of the 22nd Founder’s Day and Sports Day: holding the opening ceremony of the Student Activity Center, inviting distinguished guests to witness the signing of the MOU with Chunghwa Post, jointly promoting “SDGs + ESG Specific Action Plan"; in order to show appreciation of the generous donations from alumni and all walks of life, an art installation was placed in the atrium on the 2nd floor of the Library Building. 2. President Chen Yueduan led the distinguished guests and school supervisors to sign the 2050 Net Zero Carbon Emission Declaration and inaugurate the Hong Sze-Chuen Arts and Culture Foundation in accordance with the national 2050 Zero Carbon Emission Policy, focusing on six major directions: green university, campus carbon neutral, low-carbon transportation, green building, zero-waste low-carbon diet, and civic participation. The ceremony was held to thank the Foundation for its donation in building the Arts and Culture Section in the Student Activity Center. 3. The construction of the the Students Activity Center won Smart Building, Green Building Label and the Urban Engineering Quality Gold Award. |

1.Outstanding results in student sports competitions: Department of Athletic Performance Badminton Team, Ms. Huang You-xun won the champion of women's singles in the Estonia World Badminton Tour, and the champion of women's singles in the Netherlands Badminton International Championships 2023. Ms. Tian Xiaowen and Ms. Lin Ziyu, "National President's Cup for the Physically and Mentally Challenged Ping-Pong Ball Championships and 2023 International Tournament National Team", 1st place in Women's Singles TT10 Group, 2nd place in Women's Singles TT10 Group, 1st place in Mixed Doubles XS20 Group, 2nd place in Mixed Doubles XS20 Group. Lin Zi-yu, Tian Xiao-wen and Su Jin-xian of Department of Athletic Performance won 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in “Women's Singles TT10", "Mixed Doubles XD17-20", "Women's Doubles WD20", "Women's Singles TT10", "Men's Singles TT10", and 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in "The 4th Hangzhou Para-Asian Games 2022". In the 2023 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, NUK won 4 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals, 1st place in Open Girls' Cricket Team Championships, 2nd place in Open Boys' Cricket Team Championships, 2nd place in Open Girls' Badminton Team Championships, 5th place in Open Girls' Badminton Team Championships, 4th place in Open Girls' Bicycle Team Championships, and 6th place in Open Girls' Swimming Team Championships. 2.The Department of Applied Chemistry hosted the Chemistry National Meeting 2023, which focused on the theme "New Era of Chemistry - Sustainable Development" and brought together industry, government and academia to exchange the latest research results and innovative technologies. A number of prizes were awarded for special contributions, research papers, and other awards to recognize the hard-working scholars in the field. 3.Came in 1st place in “Top 2000 Enterprises' Favorite Universities" and "Public General Medium-sized Universities", reflecting entrepreneurs' affirmation of the university's proactive promotion of the integration of learning and application, and the linkage between industry and society. 4.Organized the 23rd Founding Anniversary Celebration and Athletic Assembly, at which a MOU was signed with HTC to jointly promote the exchange and development of the XR industry, technology, and human resources in the future. 5.The International Office organized the Asia Virtual Academy (AVA) 2023 International Conference, focusing on "Climate Resilience and Sustainable Society", which was held both physically and online. During the conference, the University signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering in India and the University of the Ryukyus in Japan to become sister universities. 6.Dr. Yuan Jing, Academic Vice President, participated in the Handover Ceremony for the Chairmanship of the Development Committee of Kaohsiung University Alliance. 7.The soccer team received a NT$3 million grant from “Elite Sports Development Scholarship" sponsored by CPC Corporation, and the two sides jointly set up “NUK CPC Team" to challenge for “Enterprise B Cup" (Taiwan's second-tier soccer league), and to further strive for entering the top 100 soccer teams in the world. 8.President Chen Yue-Duan presided over the “Groundbreaking Ceremony of National University of Kaohsiung Artificial Turf Soccer Field". 9.The Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education and the University jointly inaugurated the “Industrial Talent Training Center" on the 6th floor of the Library and Information Center. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Lin Teng-jiao, and President of the University, Dr. Chen Yue-duan, presided over the opening ceremony for the first phase of “Pilot Implementation Plan for Industrial Talent Training of Semiconductor Sports Athletes (Pilot Semi-Conductor Training Plan for Outstanding Athletes)" at the same time. 10.Host “2023 Kaohsiung-Taiwan-Japan College Football International Friendship Tournament" to accumulate the experience and strength of domestic soccer teams as well as to promote university exchanges and city diplomacy. 11.Administrative Vice President Wu Zong-fang led the administrators, artists Lin Li-ren and Huang Yu-rong, and guests to cut the ribbon for the opening of the 10th public art building "Together in Joy" on campus. 12.Inaugurated “S Corridor Technology Industry Talent Training Center" with the Kaohsiung-Pingtung-Penghu-Taitung Branch of the Ministry of Labor's Workforce Development Agency, making it one of the four largest centers in Taiwan. The training center is located on the 6th floor of the Library and Information Building of the University, and was jointly inaugurated by Mr. Li Jun-yi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor, Mr. Luo Da-sheng, Vice Mayor of Kaohsiung City, and Mr. Chen Yue-duan, President of NUK. Participants in the program include ASE, OSE, Yageo, WinWay, Taiflex, HYE, Wistron, and Streber-Tech, and Delta also attended the meeting to express their support for the program. 13.President Chen Yue-duan went to the Okinawa Prefectural Hall to share her experience in integrating the SDGs into school governance and promoting gender equality education; she also analyzed the legal framework for the promotion of gender equality in Taiwan and Japan, as well as the implementation of the legal framework. 14.President Chen Yue-duan led a delegation to visit the University of the Ryukyus to discuss academic exchanges, faculty and student exchange visits, and to deepen the sister-school relationship. 15.Participate in “5G New Technology Learning Demonstration School Program" to join national education end in every county and city. |
2024 |
1.President Chen Yue-Duan attended the National Conference of University Presidents. 2.Hosted the 24th Anniversary of the Founding of the University and the Sports Assembly, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Industry-Academia Cooperation with Science and Technology Policy Research and Information Center at the ceremony, and jointly activated the Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) Service Platform, becoming the first university in Taiwan to use the Trusted Generative AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE). 3.The woodball team won first, third, second, fifth, sixth, and eighth runner-up in the Individual Stroke Play, Youth Male Division of the 2024 National Ming-Hui Cup Woodball Championships. 4.The soccer team won the champion of the Open Men's Level 2 of the “2023 Academic Year Tertiary Soccer League” and was promoted to the Open Men's Level 1 Challenge Group. The team was awarded with special prizes such as the Team Fair Competition Prize, the Golden Boot Prize ( Huang Chao-zhong), the Silver Boot Prize (Li Jun-qi) and the Golden Glove Prize (Liu Zhi-yu). 5.The Ministry of Education (MOE) awarded the University the Third Prize in the Tertiary Section of the Green Hedge Project 2023. 6.MOE paid a visit to the University to conduct a special chapter on the Enhancement of Information Security in Higher Education Sprout Project. 7.Mr. Shi Hong-qiang, a senior student of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded the President's Award for Education. 8.The 21st Graduation Ceremony was held and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai delivered a speech. 9.The first postal service agency in Nanzi, which was established on December 6, 2012, was abolished and terminated after nearly 23 years of operation. 10.The University and Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. jointly set up the NUK Post Office in the Student Activities Center of the University. President Yue-Duan Chen and Chairman Hong-Mou Wu of Chunghwa Post Co. led the directors of the two parties to unveil the opening of the Post Office of the University, and the University also opened a “Regular Savings Account” and became the first customer. 11.The Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan announced the results of the "2013 3rd cycle university administration evaluation" and our school was rated as "passed - valid for 6 years". 12.President Chen Yue-duan officiated at the opening and unveiling ceremony of the “Artificial Turf Soccer Pitch” and the art installation “Legacy Ascends”. 13.Prof. Chi-Jen Chen assumed office as the 7th President of the University. 14.Organize a two-day and one-night “Administrators' Consensus Camp” at the Little Kenting Resort. 15.Ms. Tian Xiaowen and Ms. Lin Ziyu, Master students of the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Leisure Studies, won the silver medal in the WD20 women's doubles pool at the Paris 2024 Games. 16.Prof. Ho Wen-fu of the Department of Chemical and Material Engineering and his team established the first derivative company of the University, TakaMat Biomedical Corporation. 17.Mr. He Chi-Wei and Mr. Huang Rui-yu of the Department of Athletic Performance, specializing in badminton, won the Men's Doubles Championship in the “2024 LI-LING Vietnam International Series”. 18.Received bronze award from the TCSA Corporate Sustainability Report Award 2024 in the University category. 19.A student team from the Department of Architecture participated in the 14th VDWC World Cup of Virtual Architecture Design 2024 and won the first runner-up prize and the Special Jury Prize. 20.Pursuant to a resolution of the 2nd Academic Council meeting of the 2024 academic year, the University has discontinued the Service Learning Development program effective the 2nd semester of the 2024 academic year and retroactively. |
The University administration is organized in accordance with the University Organizational Charter. The selection and appointment of administrators are in accordance with the charter. The University Council is the highest governing decision-making body of the University, and has a President who is selected every four years to summarize the affairs of the University internally and to represent the University externally.
NUK currently has 13 administrative units and 6 academic units, including 5 colleges and general education centers. In addition, there are 5 university-level Centers, including Executive Management Training Center (EMBA), Center for Southeast Asia Research, AI Center, ASE-NUK Industry-Academic Cooperation Center, English Teaching Center and Learning Resource Center. NUK currently has 5 colleges and 1 general education center including the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Law, the college of Management, the College of Science, and the College of Engineering. There are 21 daytime bachelor's departments, 22 master's programs (19 master's programs, 2 independent research institutes, and 1 master's degree curriculum), 3 doctoral programs (2 departmental doctoral programs, and 1 college doctoral program), 1 post-baccalaureate multi-specialty training program, 1 master's degree program in industry, 2 two-year in-service undergraduate programs, and 7 master's degree in-service programs, 2 advanced business management master's in-service programs (EMBA, EMLBA), 4 international advanced business management master's in-service programs (Vietnam, Shanghai, Haixi, and Thailand), 2 two-year undergraduate in-service programs, and 3 doctoral programs.
The relevant governance organizations are described as follows:
The University Council is the highest policy making body. The Council consists of the President, Vice Presidents, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Students, Dean of General Affairs, first-level administrators, heads of colleges, heads of degree and curriculum programs, representatives of faculty, researchers, staff, students, and other relevant personnel. The term of office of the representatives is 2 years, except for the term of office of the supervisors, but the term of office of the student representatives is 1 year, and all of them are elected by the staff of each status individually, and they can be re-elected. The Council meeting is convened by the president, and it is held at least two times in each academic year. In 2024, the Council meeting was held 2 times, and 2 human resources management and 18 organizational governance issues were discussed. Consideration of matters include: 1. Organizational statutes and various important rules and regulations; 2. School affairs development plan; 3. Budget; 4. Establishment, change, merger, or discontinuance of campuses, divisions, and colleges, departments, institutes, divisions, offices, halls, centers, and their affiliates, and their meeting procedures; 5. Establishment, change, merger, or discontinuance of unofficially-established first-level research centers and committees, and their meeting procedures. 6. Teaching, student affairs, general affairs, and research matters. 7. Deliberation on teaching evaluation methods. 8. Resolutions of committees or ad hoc groups set up by the Board of Regents. 9. Proposals and recommendations of the President. 10. Matters concerning the rights and obligations of teachers and students. 11. Other important policy matters related to the school affairs.
In order to discuss and effectively promote the development plan of the university, the “National University of Kaohsiung University Affairs Development Committee” is established in accordance with Article 19 of the University's Organizational Regulations, and meets at least once per semester. The committee's tasks are as follows: 1) To discuss the direction and focus of the development of the university's affairs, 2) To discuss the addition, change, and merger of units, 3) To discuss the policies and measures of teaching, counseling, academic research, and promotion of education, 4) To handle other matters assigned by the University Council Meeting.
Each of the relevant meetings is organized for administrative, academic, students, and general affairs, and the administrative unit is responsible for promoting its own business, with committees dealing with specific purposes.
