Embedding Sustainability into NUK’s Institutional Governance
National University of Kaohsiung has used the Talloires Declaration as the foundation for its green university development. NUK integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into institutional governance, curriculum and teaching, research and industry-academia collaboration, campus environment, and social practice, advancing toward a low-carbon smart campus, sustainability talent cultivation, local engagement, and international impact.
2004
NUK’s founding president signed the Talloires Declaration, demonstrating the University’s commitment to green university development. This milestone has become an important foundation for campus sustainability governance, environmental education, and low-carbon transition.

Core Sustainability Concept
NUK places the SDGs at the center of institutional governance. Through institutionalized management, interdisciplinary talent cultivation, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility practices, the University builds a sustainability governance system with strategic alignment, measurable performance, and credible information disclosure.
From Green Campus to Sustainability Governance
Since its founding, NUK has been committed to building a sustainable campus environment. With SDGs-Inside as a core governance approach, the University embeds teaching innovation, social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and governance enhancement into its institutional values.
Teaching Innovation Integrating the SDGs into courses, interdisciplinary learning, PBL, and Capstone to cultivate students with sustainability literacy and practical capabilities.
Social Responsibility Deepening the public value and social impact of the University through USR, local revitalization, K12 education linkages, and community co-learning.
Environmental Sustainability Promoting energy saving, water conservation, carbon reduction, paper reduction, resource circulation, green buildings, and campus ecological conservation.

Based on the ten principles of the Talloires Declaration and in alignment with energy transition, Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero policy, and higher education sustainability development, NUK has established five major visions for sustainable university development.

Sustainability Governance Mechanism
With the University President and the University Affairs Meeting as the highest governance level, the Sustainability Development Promotion Committee and its working groups translate sustainability goals into institutional actions that can be tracked, reviewed, and improved.
